Plant / Landscape Projection Mapping

On August 9th, 2012, closing day of SIGGRAPH’12, Allen Battino, Philippe Bergeron, and Joan Collins hosted the “Greatest 80s CG Party of all time” — the sequel. An impressive group of CG pioneers — many Academy-Award winners, and presidents of companies — gathered to reminisce about the past, and dream about the future. PaintScaping did 3D projection mapping on landscaping, and the results were out-of-this-world.

Making of The Krewella Volcano

from V Squared Labs Inc.

The Krewella Volcano

V Squared Labs in collaboration with Stefano Novelli has created “The Volcano”, a custom crystalline stage production for Krewella’s upcoming “GET WET LIVE” tour. From pencil sketches and creative reference to architectural reality, bringing this project to life was an exciting and invigorating process.

"The Volcano" is a 30ft x 18ft superstructure incorporating reflection-mapped faceted crystals. The crystals are built out of a combination of one-way and two-way mirrored acrylic and were specifically designed to create contained infinite reflections. Each crystal is equipped with LED video access and/or interior LED tape, creating complex volumetric reflection effects which visually morph the structure from within.

A central arc of faceted crystal clusters make up the base of the structure, grounding it to the stage like the base of a rocky volcano. LED panels peek out of this area like lava from within. At the apex of the structure are the performers, central to the entire design. Behind them an LED screen displays visuals and custom content while the corner crystalline pieces flanking them act as explosive fragments from the mountainous volcano of crystals below. Stage lighting is dispersed throughout to reinforce the form and composition, completing the dynamic design.

The entire stage is modular, designed to accommodate different configurations depending on venue size and capabilities.

26th Floor | Augmented Sculpture

from urbanscreen

An ‘Augmented Sculpture’ made for the Four Seasons Hotel Beirut.

This permanent light sculpture was exclusively developed for the rooftop of the Four Seasons Hotel in Beirut. Sculpture development and content development refer to each other in an interdependent design. By assimilating specific aspects of the environment, this work was developed from scratch as a site-specific piece of art.

Disney Research HideOut augmented reality story books

How can projected imagery traverse the digital-physical divide to interact with physical objects and surfaces in the environment? HideOut explores how mobile projectors can enable new forms of interaction with digital content projected on everyday objects such as books, walls, game boards, tables, and many others.

3D Mapping for TV Advertisement / Making of

from Media Apparat

Brief: TV-advertisement with a flying actress, recorded in slow-mo with the whole scenery projected. The actress may not cast shadows.
Solution: Based on a panorama mapping projection with 60fps, 4 different sceneries were organized in 3D-space, with different projector positions for each scene.

Sundance 2013 New Frontier

from Klip Collective

In their second appearance at New Frontier, Klip Collective returned to Sundance to transform the entire front of The YARD venue into a 3-D projection-mapped parable, inspired by the Tom Waits song, “What’s He Building in There?”. Filmmaking and projection mapping collide in this fifteen-minute piece, combining live action, stop motion and cg animation.

Welcome Into The Future by Studio Rewind

from Studio Rewind

For the ‘Rotterdamse Museumnacht 2011’ Sober Industries build two large sculptures. Both sculptures were projected with mapped visuals. The spectators were able to control the visuals projected by a custom made cubicle with motion sensors and buttons, made by Bruce Moerdjiman. By tilting the cubicle the color of the visuals changed and the buttons were used to skip through the visuals and to create other effects like blending and scratching.

Light Leaks

from Kyle McDonald

A scattered array of fifty mirror balls reflect light from three projectors, filling a room completely with small reflections, casting patterns that fill the visitor’s peripheral vision. Creating a curious space that alternates between a meditative state, and an uneasy imbalance. An experiment in combining a found object with computer vision to create a profound and unusual experience.

Form and Substance: Projection Mapping in Contemporary Art

Group Exhibition curated by the curators of videomapping.tumblr.com

Projection Mapping is the premier artistic technique of our age. Projection Mapping (also called Video Mapping) utilizes specialized software to create a projected image that perfectly fits any desired surface, including irregularly shaped screens, 3 dimensional objects, architecture, etc. changing its very nature; allowing for the surface in question to convey any message that the artist desires. When done right, the result is magical. “Form and Substance” brings together work by several prominent artists in this field to create and activate paintings, sculptures and installations.

Curated by Bryan Dodson, Brian Blessinger, Michelle Dodson, and Carolyn Devlin-Antuna

Featuring work by: Adam Dare, Bryan & Michelle Dodson (Integrated Visions), Christina Graf; Davy & Kristin McGuire, Domingo Zapata, Jessica Angel, Joanie Lemercier (AntiVJ), Joel Fitzpatrick, John Ensor Parker, Kris Davidson, Laura Ramirez (Optika), Paulapart, Red Paper Heart, Robert Seidel, and Simon Anaya

In 1950, Jackson Pollock proclaimed: “New needs need new techniques. And the modern artists have found new ways and new means of making their statements. Each age finds its own technique.” Projection Mapping is the technique of our age.
