PORCELANA INNOVADORA

from Kit Webster

Porcelana Innovadora is a wall-mounted multi-faceted piece comprising of multiple layers of different types of 3D ceramic tiles.

The sculpture is illuminated through the use of black and white animated geometric patterns that oscillate and shift over the multiple extrusions of tiles, further extending their overall dimensionality and relief. These animations alter from being 2D to 3D and from chaotic to structured creating a dimensional interplay that enhances the sculpture, giving it an indistinguishable enigmatic characteristic. In addition, compositions of multiple patterns are projected simultaneously, mapped them to the different tile surfaces allowing for a limitless variety of kaleidoscopic collages.

A sophisticated rhythmic sound work made up of ceramic tile recordings mixed with high fidelity electronica samples is intrinsically linked to the vision, creating a multi-dimensional and multi-sensory synesthetic field of light, sound and form. During it’s production the artists utilised a creative process heavily reliant on cross-referential feedback allowing them to tightly fuse the sonic and visual ingredients into a singular streamlined amalgamation. In effect, it looks like the sound, and sounds like the vision.

When these elements are fused and enhanced through the reflection from the tiles on the surrounding walls, an engaging chimerical environment is produced. The piece aims to conjure a sense of the inexplicable; there are subtle references to the enigmatic religious artworks of ancient cultures yet through the use of modern software processes it paradoxically presents a new form of technological contemporary art that can be dynamically enhanced at will.

The work is a 5-minute looping composition that commences with minimal and definable elemental components and gradually evolves into the sum of its parts, concluding in a rapid and highly complex crescendo. The effect culminates in an abstract meditative experience that allows analytical thought to be effortlessly over-ridden by experiential perception.

Augmented Structures v2.0 / Istanbul Design Biennial / October 13th - December 12th, 2012

from Refik Anadol

'Augmented Structures v2.0' by Refik Anadol and Alper Derinbogaz is a distilled urban experience project which focuses on two dissimilar regions in istanbul and displays the inner characteristics of the texture of a city-center that has undergone a recent transformation within a suburban region consisting of gated communities. Presented at Istanbul Design Biennial within the 'Musibet' exhibition curated by local architect Emre Arolat, the work is based on soundscape and data mapping of two regions reveals the invisible information about their context and suggests an alternative way to understand the existence of urbanization through new media technologies.

By bringing disparate disciplines like sound, architecture and visual arts together, the development re-examines the world in aesthetic terms, in its capacity as an ‘interdisciplinary transformation’. ‘augmented structures series forces each discipline to alter its own ‘material’ state; transforming sound into mathematics, mathematics into architecture and architecture into a living structure, while presenting the viewer with a new media experience that is multi-levelled, produces sound, moves and breathes.’

The team is diversified by sound designer Kerim Karaoglu and parametric designers Coşku Cinkılıç, Koray Bingöl. — at Istanbul Modern | Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.

An Inquiring Age-SHORT ((Part of ‘Codex Dynamic,’  DUMBO Arts Festival 2012)

by Glowing Bulbs + John Ensor Parker

“An Inquiring Age” is a large-scale video-mapping projection installation created by Glowing Bulbs + John Ensor Parker, that spans 33,000 square feet (3,065 square meters) within the Manhattan Bridge Archway and on the Eastern exterior elevation of the Anchorage. The piece included audio and was presented in the Codex Dynamic video exhibition.

It is not known when man’s conceptualization of time began, but it’s influence on us as individuals and collectively is rooted in the natural world. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, and Mayans all developed calendar systems based on natural observations of the Moon’s cycles and seasonal changes. These observations of nature formulated our traditional understanding of time as linear constant-rate and are still relevant as with our historical records, calendars, folklore, religion, film, music, visual art and philosophy. Yet today as our knowledge of the natural world increases so are our concepts of time. The Laws of Relativity provide us the opportunity to speed up, slow down, go backwards or even stop time and with Quantum Mechanics time is unrelated to space and may simply be a direction at any moment, in turn, affording an object the possibility of existing at different places at the same time.

“An Inquiring Age” explores the ever-changing psyche of both the individual and the collective, as a result of our evolving perspectives of space and time.

"Time Divides" (Part of ‘Codex Dynamic,’  DUMBO Arts Festival 2012)

Using 365 seconds to represent the 365 days in a solar year, “Time Divides”
shows the underlying structure that unifies the annual seasons as understood
and experienced by humanity. This is the same structure that unifies
all people, animals, minerals and other assorted earth-bound lifeforms. The individual’s
experience of time creates the illusion of separateness. Transcending this
illusion is a path to clarity. By focusing on unity while experiencing time,
life takes on new meaning

Thanks also to Sixpoint beer (sixpoint.com) for sponsoring our cocktail receptions Saturday and Sunday nights during the DUMBO Arts Fest.

Ghost Pixel Projection Mapping Red Rocks

from Ghost Pixel Visuals

Saturday, September 29th marked history as the first ever projection mapping on the monolithic 200ft sandstone walls of Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado. Illuminated by 140,000 lumens spanning across the two 500 foot wide natural canvases, Ghost Pixel Visuals lit up the famous amphitheater displaying custom animation and unique projections catered to the venue. With high energetic music by Big Gigantic, the Boulder based electro-pop duo, created a 4 dimensional experience of audio / visual spectacles such as giant mechanical gears, worm holes to a new planet, dinosaur herds galloping, exploding rock fragments, and colorful geometric facets shifting and pulsating to the music.

Ghost Pixel Visuals, began 4 months prior the event with an array of 3D tests, analyzation of the rocks, and pre compositing animations based on projector placement and angle. Working along side Live On-Line, the Denver based projection company, crucial steps were taken to produce the projection mapping on this large of a scale for an organic surface.

Over 90 customized clips were projected over the 2 1/2 hour set choreographed with LED panels and stage lighting making a mind blowing experience for the 10,000+ person sold out show. The #Rowdytown experience sent the Red Rocks 2012 season into the history books leaving only the imagination of what can come from this new technology next year.
